Addu City, Maldives – The government has decided to build a special center for the elderly in Addu City.

The main purpose of the centre, which will be built for the first time in Maldives, is to protect the rights of the elderly, according to Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services.

The purpose of an “elderly home” is to provide an independent environment for such people and to provide a suitable environment for the care of the elderly who are taken into government care for various reasons, the ministry said.

The people who use the services are divided into three groups. it is:

  • People who want to use the service on their own (private residents)
  • Elderly people in need of assistance and care.
  • Older people being cared for at home, as “day care” during working hours to facilitate their caregivers to work.

The center will be established on a public-private partnership basis.

While a new center for the elderly has been decided to be built, such people who have no one to care for them are now being looked after at the state-run Guraidhoo centre.
