The Vice President, Faisal Naseem, has been appointed as the Amir al-Hajj to oversee the affairs of the pilgrims from Maldives this year.
As the Amir al-Hajj, the Vice President would ensure the smooth and safe operation of the Maldivian pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia.
This year, Maldives has received 1,000 official Hajj quotas and has requested to increase the quota to 2,500.
Islamic minister said that based on the numbers of additional quotas given by Saudi Arabia in the past, there could be thousand more quotas.
Maldives has long been officially given a quota of 1,000 Hajj pilgrims. However, the number was lowered to 435 with the outbreak of coronavirus.
