Maldives Police Service has told that the man arrested from yesterdays PPM/PNC protest in Malé City yesterday for throwing something at police when he came forward and did not have a child with him at the time.

This comes while the opposition PPM/PNC issued a statement condemning the police for brutally arresting a man who took a photograph of the protest while on a motorcycle with a child. The police have also been criticised on social media for the incident.

Responding to the criticism, Police tweeted that the man was arrested for throwing an object at the police.

However, videos which have been released on social media show a child present while the man was being arrested and put in the police vehicle. The video also shows the protesters using abusive language at the presence of the child.

The opposition has said that the Human Rights Commission and the National Integrity Commission should investigate the arrest of a man in front of a child Using excessive force.
