Opposition meets with the President to discuss Yameen’s case

Opposition coalition of PPM and PNC have met with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to discuss the verdict passed on former president Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

The meeting which was requested for by the leaders of the opposition coalition was held at the President’s Office on Sunday evening. However, while no information on the meeting was released to the public, the opposition revealed that they would publish the information soon enough.

The disgraced former president is currently serving a sentence of five years for money laundering by crediting one million dollars to be received by the state for the lease of Ga. Vodamula, via MMPRC. The verdict was passed on 28 November, 2019.

While Yameen serves his sentence, his verdict has been appealed at High Court and his supporters continue to protest on the streets of Male’, demanding his release.

While Yameen’s supporters claim that his verdict is a political one, PPM Parliamentary Group leader and MP of Naifaru constituency, Ahmed Shiyam announced that they would be transferring Yameen back home before the 6th of January, 2020.
