Eight officers charged with assault

Male’, Maldives – Maldives Police Service has revealed that eight officers have been charged with assault of a suspect.

According to MPS, the officers were charged in November 2019, for the incident which took place in July 2019.

The institution revealed that initially, on 31st November 2019, police requested the Prosecutor General’s Office to press charges against 11 officers who were involved in the incident, of which the Prosecutor General’s Office decided to press criminal charges against only eight of those officers.

“Since the officers involved in this case belong to the Crime Command, the investigation into this case was run by a team composed of investigative officers outside of the Crime Command” revealed Police.

In addition to this, the matter of the officers who participated in the drug raid operation pertaining to the incident has also been submitted to the internal disciplinary board of the institution. It has been revealed that the board took the decision to demote the officers, remove their colour badge awarded for discipline and change the departments of all officers.

The victim in the matter was an expatriate.
