Former President Waheed makes a political comeback, joins PPM

Male’, Maldives – Former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has made a comeback into Maldivian politics by joining PPM, as the Special Advisory of the opposition Progressive Congress Coalition.

The signing took place in a special ceremony held by the opposition followed by the press conference at 20:45.

Prior to Waheed taking on the role of Special Advisory, the leadership of the party consisted of Ghassaan Maumoon, son of former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom who is also the nephew of the other former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom, and Ahmed Shiyam who is the MP for Naifaru constituency as the leader of the party Yameen Abdul Qayyoom completes his five year sentence for money laundering.

PPM has been running its opposition activities in coalition with PNC, of which the president is former MP of Fonadhoo constituency Abdul Raheem Abdullah (Adhurey), along with former Economic Minister and current MP of Maavashu constituency Mohamed Saeed as a party member.

The former president who came to power following the resignation of the then president, Mohamed Nasheed said on a programme by VTV on March that he has no intention of returning back to Maldivian politics.
