Male’, Maldives – Discussion of operating additional international flights to Gan International Airport has been held between parliament members of Addu and Transport Minister Aishath Nahula.

In the meeting held at the ministry yesterday, the members discussed issues being faced by the airport in operating international flights and other transport related issues in Addu.

This comes after the Managing Director of Ace Aviations, which is the local operator of SriLankan Airlines, Mohamed Firaq met with the members to discuss the future of flights between Gan and Colombo after Covid-19 lockdown ends. After his meeting with the members, Firaq told the local media outlets that there is no guarantee that they would be able to operate flights to Addu as they do not get enough passengers from Addu alone.

He also mentioned that from their experience of the past three years of operations in Gan, they cannot continue if they are not able to have connectivity between Addu and Huvadhoo atoll. He has urged the importance of having scheduled flights between the southern three atolls for them to start the flights between Gan and Colombo again.

Members have told that they are optimistic after the meeting with the minister and that they hope to see a faster pace in airport expansion and development project.
