HEOC press conference: New restrictions put in place

Male’, Maldives – Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC) has announced several new restrictions in place for the whole country as well as specific for Male’ region, as Maldives observes a daunting increase in the number of Covid-19 infections in the country.

In a special press conference held at HEOC on Tuesday evening, it was announced that a curfew will be executed in the Male’ region from 22:00 to 05:00 every day until further notice. Along with this, traveling to Male’ unless absolutely necessary has also been put a hold on.

Further, as per new instructions, it has been made mandatory to wear masks when out in public for the entire country, as opposed to the previous instruction which only specified those living in Male’ to be wearing masks as a mandatory rule.

While the new restrictions were announced on Tuesday evening, the government also announced that all government offices will remain closed until Sunday, extending the Eid holidays, however requiring employees to work from home when necessary and to provide all public services online as much as possible.

Apart from this all schools in the Male’ region will also remain closed for an additional two weeks as the Education Ministry, in coordination with HPA has decided that for the health and safety of students, it is best to remain home with families and continue classes online during this time.
