The plant to be financed under this project is expected to process 500 metric tonnes of waste per day, which would in turn create energy. According to ADB, 8 megawatts of energy would be produces from the facility, and would decrease the space required to manage waste in the region, while making it easier to produce renewable energy.
ADB plans to hand over the implementation of the project to a private party, which would be responsible for the running of the facility for 15 years.
ADB also added that this project would facilitate the work of the Environment Ministry as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (HPA).
EPA and Environment Ministry are expected to receive MVR 500,000 in aid to increase the expertise within the ministry.
