Covid-19: Additional 194 confirmed cases and 97 recoveries

Malé, Maldives — HPA confirmed additional 194 Covid-19 cases and 97 recoveries in Maldives.

HPA disclosed that, between 6pm of August 20, and 6pm of August 21, additional 194 cases were confirmed for the virus in Maldives. They are:

  • 167 Maldivian nationals
  • 16 Bangladeshi nationals
  • 07 Indian nationals
  • 01 Sri Lankan national
  • 01 Nepalese national
  • 01 Thai national
  • 01 Italian national

Among the confirmed 194 cases, 191 of the cases were from the Greater Male’ area and the remaining 03 were from the atolls of Maldives.

With these 197 cases that were confirmed over the past 24 hours, Maldives now has a total of 6,564 confirmed Covid-19 cases, increased from 5,000 to 6,000 cases in just 09 days. Currently among these cases, there are 2,527 active cases present in the Maldives.

Easing the lock-down measures in the Capital of Maldives, Malé city, has contributed a lot in increasing the number of confirmed cases in Maldives, contributing to over 90% of total cases.

Infact, the health authorities has warned of a wide community spread relating to the increase of the number of cases that are not linked to the existing clusters.

Previously the majority of the confirmed cases were of foreign nationals. However, since the lock-down easement on the capital city Malé, it has contributed a lot in increasing the number of confirmed cases for Maldivian nationals having the majority of the cases as well.

While 194 people tested positive for the virus today, 97 people have completely recovered from the virus over the past 24 hours according to HPA. Along with these 97 recoveries, a total of 4,012 people have completely recovered from the virus in Maldives. The recovery rate of Maldives has decreased from 86% to 61% since the lock-down easement.

Up to date, 26 have passed away from Covid-19 in Maldives. The deceased are 20 elderly Maldivian nationals, 5 Bangladeshi nationals and a Filipino national.

Currently there are 1,398 people in the isolation facilities of Maldives and 166 people are hospitalized due to the virus.
