Male’, Maldives – Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has asked the Minister of Economic Development, Ismail Fayyaz to resign from office.

Nasheed, who is currently in the UK, requested this from Minister Fayyaz in a letter he sent to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chair Person and MP of West Henveiru constituency, Hassan Latheef.

In this regard, Nasheed stated in the letter that he asks this of Minister Fayyaz as the President of MDP, due to a damage that may befall the party, and not due to any personal grudges. He also stressed that he does not have any personal enmity with any of the party members or any of the ministers.

In the letter, Nasheed went on to say that MDP has always been deemed a very “clean” party by many, and that the most significant trait of the first and short administration of the party was the lack of corruption within the government.

“It is no a political decision to look into whether the Minister of Economic Development indulged in corrupt activities or not. The tasks handed to me by the party are political. What I am highlighting is that, if considering the matter from a political perspective, Minsiter Fayyaz is the responsibility of the party. In this regard, I request Minister Fayyaz to tender his resignation.” Nasheed’s letter read.

This comes as Nasheed attempts to have a no confidence vote taken against Fayyaz, something which he said that he would take to the national council of MDP as well.

While Nasheed’s dissatisfaction with Fayyaz is evident, Fayyaz had previously stated that he is not worried about it. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also expressed his full faith in Fayyaz.
