Malé, Maldives — The Education Ministry has announced the schools in the greater Malé area will be opening for students in grade 9 and 10 starting from October onward.

A statement released by the Education Ministry on Saturday morning revealed that the decision to open schools was taken after assessing the COVID-19 situation and consulting with the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Although the schools are currently only open for 11th and 12th grader, from October 04 onwards, it will reopen for students in grade 9 and 10 as well.

The capital city of Maldives, Malé city, is the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak due to which the school was closed for students below the ninth grade after HPA announced strict health safety measures in July due to a drop in COVID-19 numbers. However, after the Covid-restrictions were relaxed in the city, a spike in the number of confirmed cases was noticed followed by the closing of school again. Classes have since been held virtually for all students.
