Schools in Malé to be closed for students below grade 8

Malé, Maldives – The Education Ministry has announced that there will be no physical classes in schools of Malé for students below grade 8 and that online classes will continue for these students.

Education Ministry said that this regulation is being implemented as a safety precaution in Malé as the number of Covid-19 cases are rapidly increasing in capital city Malé.

In addition to this, Health Protection Agency (HPA) has also strengthened the measures and extended pre-existing safety measures in Malé to control the spread of the virus as much as possible. Curfew has been implemented in the city from 18:00 to 6:00 and gatherings involving more than 10 people have been banned. Additionally, cafés and restaurants are also to be closed from 20:00 onwards.

As of yesterday, Maldives has recorded a total of 19,479 positive cases of Covid-19. 133 people tested positive yesterday only, 117 of which are from Malé area. While Maldives has recorded over 17,000 recoveries so far, the 62nd death due to Covid-19 in Maldives was recorded this morning. Health professionals urge the public to adhere to safety guidelines as much as possible to minimize the spread of the virus.
