Malé, Maldives — President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that there will be no National Day functions for this year.
While the island nation celebrates their National Day on the third month of Hijri calendar, this year’s National day will be falling on 18th October. However, the President’s office revealed that the President has decided to cancel off the annual National Day functions for the year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
While the 2020 National Awards were scheduled to be given during the National Day functions, the cancellation of plans has resulted in the rescheduling of this event as well.
According to the President’s office, rescheduling of the National Award show will depend on the Covid-19 situation of Maldives, however, the awards will surely be presented to recipients at a special function.
While the usual plan of handing out the National Awards are scheduled for the Independence Day celebrations, as the event also got cancelled for the year, National Awards were later on postponed to be given on National Day.
The government has been reducing the state expenditure to an extent as an attempt of recovering from the losses the government has faced due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
