Malé, Maldives — The Secretary of State of the United States, Michael R. Pompeo will be having an official trip to the Maldives on 28th of October.
During this official trip to the island nation, Secretary Pompeo will be visiting the President of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and he will also be having an official discussion with the foreign minister, Abdulla Shahid.
The discussions between Secretary Pompeo and Minister Shahid will be about the current battles that are being faced by Maldives due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, along with the discussions about the sectors that can be used to strengthen the bonds between the two countries.
After the official visit from the Foreign Minister of America James Adam Baker on July 24 of 1992, this is the first time a member of the government of America will be visiting the Maldives on an official trip. The visit from Pompeo comes after Maldives had recently signed a Framework for a Defence and Security Relationship agreement with the United States on September.
According to the US Department of Defence, the agreement intends “to deepen engagement and cooperation in support of maintaining peace and security in the Indian Ocean, and marks an important step forward” in the partnership between the two countries.
