New political party approved in Maldives

Male’, Maldives – The Elections Commission of Maldives has approved the formation of a new political party in the country.

The Commission revealed that the former President of the National Integrity Commission (NIC), Yoosuf Maaniu was granted the permission to do the necessary, with regards to the formation of the new party, ‘National Democratic Congress.”

Upon this approval, the party must now collect 3,000 signatures as members of the party, in order to be registered in the country. As per the laws, the party would only be granted government funding, should the party accumulate 10,000 signatures as members of the party.

Currently there are 10 political parties registered in the Maldives, which are Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD), People’s National Congress (PNC), Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party (MLSPD) and Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM).
