Arrest made for abduction and extortion of woman

Malé, Maldives — A man has been arrested in connection to the abduction and extortion of a local businesswoman, who runs a private partnership with a family members was allegad kidnapped and asked for MVR 25,000 from her family as ransom money.

On Sunday night, a 33-year-old businesswoman named Shirumeena Aboobakuru was reported missing. A relative of Shirumeena revealed That she went to purchase goods for her business around mid-day and made contact with the family at around 13:30 before she went missing on Saturday afternoon.

The family reported the case to Maldives Police Service after 22:45, upon which Police called for the assistance of the public in finding her. However, Shirumeena reportedly came back home the next morning with injuries to her her wrists, face and other parts of the body.

“She has cuts on her crists. There are marks where her arms and legs were tied. She was hit in the face. She has injuries on her back,” local media ‘Sun’ quoted a relative of Shirumeena.

According to the ‘Sun’, the family member revealed that the abductors threatened to kill her if she didn’t give them the money or if she alerted anyone regarding the abduction.

“She was held captive for extortion. She was released after they robbing her of MVR 25,000. They threatened to kill her if she didn’t give them the money. They also threatened to kill her if she told anyone,” the relative told.

Police revealed that Shirumeena is “believed to have been abducted, harmed, blackmailed and extorted money from”, and that the matter is being investigated. In the mean time Shirumeena is receiving treatment for her injuries.
