Addu City, Maldives – Addu Equatorial Hospital has reported to have completed two successful knee replacement surgeries on a 68 and a 71 year old patient on November 8.

The surgeries were performed by the orthopaedics team led by Dr. Gustavo, Dr. Hazem and Dr. Munshid assisted by nurses from AEH, IGMH and anaesthesiologist Dr. Patel.

Both surgeries were reportedly successful and the patients were allowed to ambulate the next day, with AEH noting that this was an important milestone for the hospital, as knee replacement surgeries are crucial in treatment of various conditions of the knee especially in the aging population of the Maldives.

Knee replacement surgeries involve removal of the cartilage and bones that are diseased or destroyed by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or even by previous injury to the knee and replacing those structures by plastic and metal parts specially designed for the knee. Most patients can be discharged within 2 to 3 days after the surgery and the majority of the patient’s will have reduced or complete elimination of knee pain following the surgery.

With these surgeries the hospital announces that knee replacement surgeries will now be available at the hospital. These new services are indeed going to benefit the community and improve the overall health of the population.
