Home Minister visits high security prison units

Male’, Maldives – The Minister of Home Affairs of Maldives, Abdullah Imran, along with the Commissioner of Prisons, Ahmed Mohamedfulhu, have visited the high security units of the Maafushi jail on Monday.

During this visit, the Minister and the Commissioner looked into the matters of the units and visited individual cells and heard the concerns of the prisoners there. According to Maldives Correctional Services, the pair also looked into how the concerns can be resolved.

However, no details of the concerns or how and when any of the issues highlighted by the inmates would be resolved were detailed by Corrections or by the Ministry.

There are currently more than 1200 offenders housed at Maafushi Prison, Male’ Prison and Asseyri Prison; the three prisons of Maldives Correctional Service.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) was formed by President of Maldives H. E. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom on 31 December 2013 under the Prisons and Parole Act 14/2013.
