Jerusalem, Israel – A group of scientists have discovered the world’s first ever treatment that can be used to successfully kill the cancer cells, using DNA altering tools.

A study on developing a treatment for cancer was done in collaboration with Israel’s Tel Aviv University, New York University and Harvard Medical School.

The scientists revealed that when the treatment was done using mice, the research proved to be very effective in killing the cancerous cells without harming the healthy cells around it. This is possible as the scientists used a technique which relies on DNA editing tools.

The scientists announced that as the research has proven to be successful in mice, hopefully, it can be used in treating humans as soon as within the upcoming two years.

A cancer expert from Israel’s Tel Aviv University, Professor Dan Peer stated that the research which has been done shows  “no side effects” and they believe that a “cancer cell treated in this way will never become active again,” according to the ‘Times of Israel‘.

“This technology can extend the life expectancy of cancer patients and we hope, one day, cure the disease.”

Professor Dan Peer said.

While Professor Peer admitted that the technology needs to be further developed, he said that the it can also be used within three treatments to destroy a tumor as it can “physically cut the DNA in cancerous cells, and those cells will not survive.”

This is the first time in history that any scientist was able to create a successful and effective treatment for cancer using the Crispr genome editing technology, a technology that works by cutting out a section of DNA.
