Temporary shelters being provided for the homeless

Male’, Maldives – The Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services has initiated efforts to provide temporary shelters for the homeless in Male’.

The Ministry of Gender revealed that efforts are underway in collaboration with other relevant institutions to ensure that the basic rights and necessities are being ensured for those who are on the streets of Male’, in which, work for provision of temporary shelters have begun.

Within these efforts, the Ministry has dedicated a toll free hotline, 1421 which can be used to report in cases of homeless persons to the Ministry.

During the initial days of the lockdown caused due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the government of Maldives assisted the homeless by providing shelters and food to those in need. However, as the assistance was discontinued during last month, the number of people being left to the streets has been increasing, causing alarm within the public.

The Ministry has since restarted the efforts, and assures social protection will be provided to such persons.
