Drugs reduce participation of youth in development: VP Faisal

Adducity, Maldives – Vice President of Maldives Faisal Naseem said that the use of drugs is an obstacle in the way of the country’s development as it reduces the participation of the nation’ss youth in its development.

Vice President Faisal said this speaking at a special ceremony held to lay the foundation for a Drug Detoxification and Community Rehabilitation Centre which is to be built in Hulhumeedhoo, Addu. The ceremony was held yesterday afternoon in Hulhumeedhoo during the VP’s visit to Addu city and Fuvahmulah City.

VP Faisal said that the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the government has always prioritised building youngsters that are productive and do contribute to the development of the country. However, VP said that drug addiction is an obstacle on the way of achieving this and that drugs reduce the participation of the youth in the development of the country.

In addition to this, VP Faisal said that it is now necessary to find a way to help those who have already been involved in drugs to ensure that they are able to build a family and become responsible personnels in the society. He also said that with the construction of the Drug Detoxification and Community Rehabilitation Centre, addition opportunities would be open for those seeking treatment for their addiction to drugs.

He further said that it is expected that the number of people going into crime due to drugs will decrease in the Southern Atolls as the construction of the centre is complete and opens up their services.
