High chance of new COVID-19 variant reaching Maldives: HEOC

Male’, Maldives – Pediatric Infections Expert Dr.Nazla Mustafa has said that there is a high probability of the new COVID-19 variant reaching Maldives.

While speaking on Wednesday night’s press conference, Dr.Nazla noted that the new strain of COVID-19 is a highly infectious variant and that the virus may uncontrollably spread in our community if release was given on basic preventive measures such as social distancing and wearing masks.

In addition to this, Dr.Nazla highlighted the prolonged closure of schools and said that while schools are to reopen soon, a second outbreak may greatly cost the students as well. She urged the public to remain cautious of the matter to prevent such a situation.

The probability of the new variant reaching Maldives is actually very high. The danger is not only from people arriving from UK, the virus has been found in 21 countries so far and poses a threat. The presence of the virus can be confirmed only by testing.

While the new Covid-19 variant has also spread to France and Spain from UK, many nations are once again expressing concern and are vigilant over the new strain as scientists informed that it is approximately 70 times more contagious and more difficult to control. The virus has now been found in India and Pakistan as well. Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) and health officials continue to urge the public to adhere to the preventive measure for everyone’s safety.
