Over 4,000 tourist arrivals recorded on January 2nd

Male, Maldives — Maldives has welcomed over 4,000 tourist arrivals on the second day of 2021 making it the highest arrivals so far recorded in the year.

Although the number of arrivals on New Year was fairly low with 1,916 tourists, The Tourism Ministry informed that Maldives welcomed a total of 4,100 tourist on January 2nd making it this year’s daily new record.

While the Ministry has targeted to welcome at least 1.5 million tourists this year, the country has managed to welcome approximately 6,016 tourists in the first two days of 2021.

To attract more tourists to the country, Maldives has also introduced the World’s first tier-based travel loyalty program titled ‘Maldives Border Miles’ that came to effect on January 1st with the arrival of the first tourist in 2021.

Through the Border Miles loyalty program, tourists will be earning points based on the duration of tourist stay and the number of times they visit the country. Tourists also have the opportunity to earn additional points by visiting the country during special occasions.

Tourism Minister of Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom stated that although Maldives foresees to face more challenges in the future, the Tourism Ministry sees a lot of improvement and success in 2021 compared to the year before.

Minister Mausoom expressed hope and excitement towards the year 2021 and stated that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Maldives will be ready for 2021 with new facilities and developed areas and that “2021 is going to be a year of investment for the Maldives.”
