Maldives to reinstate diplomatic relations with Qatar after three years

Male’, Maldives — The Government of Maldives has decided to reinstate full diplomatic relations with Qatar after three years.

The Foreign Minister of Maldives, Abdullah Shahid tweeted to inform that Maldives will be reinstating full diplomatic relations with Qatar after Maldives severed the relation between the two countries in June 2017 during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s presidency.

While reinstating the diplomatic relations between Qatar and Iran was one of the electoral pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Foreign Minister Shahid has not yet spoken about reinstating the relationship between Iran and Maldives.

Following the annual summit of Gulf Cooperation Council, all four nations that cut diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar in June 2017, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, over allegations of Qatar supporting “terrorist” organizations also announced that they will be restoring the ties with Qatar at the summit.
