Male’, Maldives – The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates for various wards of Addu in the upcoming local council elections will open up Addu to the world, claimed Mohamed Nasheed in a tweet earlier today.

In the same tweet, Nasheed advised the opposition to not plan any new projects on the land where the Police Academy is built, stating that it is now a educational institute. He also asked whether the opposition has no plans to provide higher education in Addu.

The Former President and Speaker of Parliament tweeted this out after after Opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate for Addu City’s Mayor Mohamed Latheef, stated earlier today that if he is elected, he will change the Police Academy currently building in Addu City into a hotel.

While speaking at a program, Latheef said that while a large training school is being built in Addu City with the assistance of India, the information received from Indian media reveals that it is an Indian navy base that is being built in Maldives.

Latheef said that although multiple questions have been raised regarding this matter, none has been properly answered by the Addu City Council, Foreign Ministry and even by the Indian Embassy in Maldives.

We are still asking the Indian High Commission to issue a statement saying that they will leave the academy to Maldivian Police officers once its done. But they haven’t issued it yet.

Latheef stated.

While advising the Addu citizens and asking them to properly think about the matter, Latheef mentioned that if he becomes the mayor of Addu, he will change the Police Academy to a hotel.

Latheef stated that the Police Academy is being built in the most important location of the city. He said that it is important to think about the future regarding this matter as it is the only location available to further improve the tourism in Addu.

Mocking Latheef’s statement, MP and MDP candidate for Addu City mayor for the upcoming local council elections, Ali Nizar said that the opposition might even promise to change the runway in Gan International Airport to a running track.

In his tweet, Nizar mentioned that the Addu Citizens can see what the PPM government had done to the Equatorial Convention Centre (ECC), City Square, Dhondheena Monument and the roads of Maradhoo and Feydhoo during Yameen Abdul Gayooms presidency. Nizar stated that it is a destructive ideology.

Nizar has also made outrageous claims nearing elections, when last year, he revealed his plans to build a bridge between Hulhumeedhoo, which was met with the same ridicule and skepticism from the public as Latheef’s recent statements.
