Male’, Maldives — Opposition coalition of PPM and PNC calls on to schedule the meeting they have requested with Gender Minister, Aishath Ahmed Didi as quickly as possible.

A statement released by the coalition informed that they sent a letter on October 19, 2020 requesting to schedule a meeting with the Gender Minister as the coalition had been receiving several complaints regarding delay in providing justice to multiple rape and sexual assault cases in the country.

The coalition informed that they wish to meet and discuss with Minister Aishath about these matters along with several other things concering the women in Maldives.

As a response to the coalition, the Ministry informed via email that for the upcoming months it is not possible to schedule a meeting with the Gender Minister as she is in abdroad and that the Ministry will send a specific response regarding the meeting once she returns to the country.

However, the coalition noted that it has been three months since their request and the coalition has still not received any information regarding when a meeting can be scheduled with the Minister.

The coalition believes that if a Minister is out of the country for a long time, then the one who takes the responsibility of the Minister must attend these type of matters and must provide possible solutions for it.

The coalition stated.

The coalition further stated that if the Ministry did not assign someone else the responsibility of the Minister while she is abroad, then it is an extremely irresponsible act of the incumbent government towards protecting the rights of all the citizens.

The coalition said that they are certain that the incumbent government does not care about the concerns of their citizens.
