Male’, Maldives – Maldivian is reportedly preparing to begin International Flights to Gan International Airport (GIA) in Addu City.

Sources have told news outlet AdduLive that Maldivian will begin these flights in June 2021. GIA, Velana International Airport (VIA) and Maafaru Airport are reported to be the main hubs for international trips.

This news comes after chartered seaplane services commenced from Addu City to Huvadhoo atoll via Maldivian, after an agreement was signed between Addu International Airport and Island Aviation Services, the parent company of Maldivian, on 3rd October 2020.

While tourists have already started using this service, there are ongoing talks with Island Aviation to begin daily trips to Fuvahmulah, which will further improve the currently recovering tourism industry in Addu.

Developing Addu City as a tourism hub is a presidential pledge of President Ibrahim Solih. While there are various ongoing tourism related projects, the pandemic has caused any results from these to take a couple of years before benefiting Addu residents.

The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdullah Mausoom has recently stated that all the major events that will be held in Maldives for the World Tourism Day of 2021 will be hopefully held in the southernmost atoll, Addu City. He added that that he will market the diving site of the British Loyalty wreck as a fascinating diving site in both Maldives and in the whole world.

The Minister said this while speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the diving event that was held earlier this month in Maradhoo, Addu City to mark the 75th anniversary of the British Loyalty wreck a popular dive site in Addu.
