Addu City, Maldives – Additional two Covid-19 cases have been recorded in Addu City in connection to the Hithadhoo cluster discovered on Saturday, taking the total confirmed cases in this cluster to 7.
Mayor of Addu City, Abdullah Sodiq has revealed that the newly confirmed two cases were of two airport securities who had consulted to the flu clinic in S. Hithadhoo as they were symptomatic for the Covid-19 virus.
Mayor Sodiq informed that the samples of these two individuals returned back positive for the virus taking the total confirmed Covid-19 cases related to the Hithadhoo Cluster case to 7 within less than 24 hours.
The first two cases of the Hithadhoo Cluster were dentified from Hithadhoo on Saturday. They were contacts of a team who arrived from Male’ for an Aviation Security Command training in Addu City. Mayor Sodiq informed that several staff of Gan International Airport partook in the training. This is why, contact tracing has been initiated for all participants.
While 46 samples have been so far taken from the contacts of the individuals who attended the Aviation Security Command training, the results of only 7 of these samples have returned and they have all tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.
In addition to this, it has been confirmed that an individual, who traveled from Addu to Thinadhoo has tested positive for Covid-19 and that they were a close contact of the two individuals who tested positive for Covid-19 in Hithadhoo.
This cluster comes just a couple of days after a major cluster was discovered in Hulhumeedhoo of the same city, in a Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) site. This comes almost a year after Maldives recorded the first cases of Covid-19, making it a first for the city to have cases test positive from individuals who are not in quarantine.
Addu City is currently under monitoring status along with Thinadhoo as well.
