JUST IN: No local council ballot boxes for Kuala Lumpur and London

Malé, Maldives – The Maldives Foreign Ministry has informed that although ballot boxes were supposed to be placed in Kuala Lumpur and London for the upcoming local council elections, it is no longer feasible. The local council elections are to be held on 10 April 2021.

With this new development, the Maldivian citizens living in these countries at the date will no longer be able to cast their vote.

The Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections will be held on the 10 April 2021 in accordance with the Local Council Elections Special Provision Act 2020. The preparations for the elections began from 29 January 2021.

The EC has announced the deadline for changing voting districts for citizens as 08 February 2021, tomorrow and advises applying for national identity cards before the election.

While he first amendment to the Local Council Elections Special Provision Act 2020 requires relevant authorities to move forward with the election process despite the current health emergency, it also requires that the proceedings should be held per the guidelines set forth by the Director General of Public Health.
