COVID-19: 34 positive cases identified from Hulhumalé jail

Hulhumalé, Maldives – Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has confirmed that 34 people have tested positive for Covid-19 from Hulhumalé jail.

These 34 cases came after the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) informed that a 56-year-old prisoner in the Hulhumalé jail has tested positive for Covid-19 on February 1, 2021.

The prisoner was immediately transferred into a quarantine facility from the prison after which the HPA had put the Hulhumalé jail and took 102 samples of the staffs and detainees in the Hulhumalé jail. 70 detainees and 29 officers were identified as contacts of these positive cases.

HEOC informed that 34 of these samples has tested positive for Covid-19 and that they have isolated all the individuals who tested positive for the virus. HEOC noted that contact tracing is currently ongoing in the jail.
