Male’, Maldives — The Education Ministry has announced that they have decided to change the beginning of the new academic year permanently to August in Maldives.
The Ministry of Education of Maldives has informed that while the changes brought to the academic calendar due to the ongoing Covid-19, this change will be made permanent with the country beginning its academic new year in August 10 of each year.
The announcement was made at a press conference where the Minister of Education, Dr. Aishath Ali revealed that the ministry has decided that the new academic year would now begin in August. With this, she informed that the annual school holiday would begin in late-June or July from now on. She also noted that two or three more weeks of holiday would also be included in the mid-term break scheduled for students in December.
The Deputy Minister of the Education Ministry, Ahmed Mujahid stated that the new changed to the academic calendar was brought after much deliberation with stakeholders.
He noted that changing the academic year was a request made by the citizens, especially from parents who were working in the tourism sector, when the incumbent government took office and this change will allow tourism sector parents to spend more time with their children.
