Malé, Maldives – 104 types of birds have been declared as protected in the Maldives.
Environment Ministry has made this decision today under the laws concerning the environmental protection. Some of the protected birds include Pigeons, Eagle, Greater Flamingo, European Turtle Dove, Jungle Nightjar and Wood Sandpiper and White Terns.
The Ministry has stated that the need for protection of birds arose due to the need for safety of the migrating birds that frequently stop by in Maldives. Harming the birds, taking them as pets and trapping them is now prohibited.
This is not the first time that the Environment Ministry has taken measures to protect the birds in Maldives.
