R. Maduvvari, Maldives – MP of Maduvvari Constituency and Vice President of Opposition PNC, Adam Shareef has called for the arrests of rapists of a 14 year old girl in R. Maduvvari, and to release the locals detained for protesting for rapist’s arrest.
MP Shareef condemned the actions of the Police and called out for the immediate release of civilians who protested upon days of no arrests or progress regarding the rape case.
The protests in Maduvvari are regarding a gang rape case on the evening of the 3rd of this month, a school girl was taken to a guesthouse near the school by her teacher after school extracurricular activities, given a drugged drink and raped by four men including three masked men. While the girl could not identify the masked men, the rapists had threatened to kill the 14 year old.
Arrest the rapists. The leaders of institutions who have failed. Not citizens.

Adam Shareef addressed a letter to the President of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed regarding the case. The letter said that the police had not questioned nor found any evidence pointing to suspects involved in the crime, even though it has been days since it happened, and said that the current actions by authorities asks to question whether justice will be served for the 14 year old.
The girl [victim] herself has given a statement. [I] request the parliament to immediately begin a committee investigation.

MP Shareef said that the police are neglecting the crime and that it would be better if a committee of the parliament reviewed it. The police has previously said that they have found no evidence pointing to any suspects.
This proves that the concerned authorities are negligent, and that sexual harassment such as rape against women, are not taken seriously.

The MP of Maduvvari constituency also said that the lack of justice for the innocent young child and rapists roaming free is causing public distress. In addition to the parliament investigating the case, he urged the parliament to investigate the manner in which authorities are dealing with Maduvveri islanders.
The people of R. Maduvvari had protested in front of the police station last Wednesday night because no one had been arrested in relation to the crime. The police had arrested 10 locals who were protesting. The locals have been protesting everyday since, holding signs against rape and asking for justice.
MP Shareef had requested for the immediate release of the people that were arrested while protesting.
Gender Ministry has said that they are closely following the mental and physical health of the 14 year old girl who was gang raped.
