Lh. Atoll, Maldives – Three Bangladeshis who were stranded on a sand bank near Lh. Huravalhi have been saved by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) today.

MNDF has stated that the Bangladeshis had gone there to collect sand, but got caught up in a thunderstorm and could not find a way back to the island.

The Maldives Coast Guard saw them at 14:20 pm today while on their way to Lh. Hinnavaru and has now rescued the three foreigners.

Many incidents have occurred due to bad weather conditions that has hit the Maldives since yesterday. Just today, a fuel barge crashed into a reef near Feydhoo Finolhu, after it’s anchor dragged off due to bad weather conditions.

The barge named “Trans fuel- 09” near Malé when the anchor was unlocked from location and subsequently crashed into the Southern reef of Feydhoo Finolhu. MNDF had also been active on the scene and helped people to safety.

In another case, three people have been saved from a sinking tugboat carrying 10,000 liters of diesel. The three individuals were saved before the boat sank, and Coast Guard is now salvaging the sunken boat.

MNDF and concerned authorities have advised the public to not continue with travelling by the sea in these bad weather conditions.
