Supply boat sinks in Maldives causing MVR 1.5 million in damages

Malé, Maldives – The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) reported that a supply boat “Vaivilaa” sank near Lh. Aligau earlier this morning causing property damages and leaving 5 people stranded at the sea.

The 60ft “Vaivilaa” supply boat en route from K. Kaashidhoo to Lh. Atoll sank 4NM outside Lh. Aligau at 05:59 this morning.

MNDF reported that the Northern Coast Guard Squadron and the MNDF Dornier plane was dispatched to the location. While the Coast Guard was able to recover the 5 Maldivians on board and transport them K. Mafilafushi at 08:30, the goods onboard the supply boat were not recovered.

Speaking to local news Dhauru the supply boat’s owner stated that due to the poor weather conditions there was no option to recover the boat or its contents.

The damages acquired add up to MVR 1.5 million without including the farming goods onboard according to the owner.

On September 26, poor weather conditions caused another marine accident killing one after a Safari boat sank near the capital city Malé.
