Malé, Maldives – Opposition PPM/PNC coalition has started to carry out door-to-door campaign for their candidates in Malé City for the upcoming Local Council Elections (LCE) and and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.
Opposition coalition advisors Former President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and Former Vice President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed along with senior members of the opposition and candidates had participated in todays door-to-door campaign event.
Following todays event, spokesperson of the opposition coalition, Heena Waleeh stated that they had met with several individuals of Malé City and that many people had shared their concerns. Heena also added that they had met with several people on the roads and at houses of Malé.
The Local Council Election was originally supposed to be held on 4 April 2020, but due to the alarming increase of Covid-19 cases in Maldives, the country had gone into a lockdown, and the election was delayed by a year to 10 April 2021.
The Parliament had to pass a special bill due to the implications of Covid-19 in the elections, and this bill is to be followed for all incoming elections. The Local Council Election is to be held on April 10th.
