Male’, Maldives — Progressive Congress Coalition has stated that they cannot see the government doing any proper work to hold the Local Council Elections at the earliest because the ruling party is certain of their defeat in the elections.

The Spokesperson of the Opposition Coalition and PPM, Heena Waleed said that it is a huge concern that the local election is being delayed constantly without having a certain date set for it while speaking at a press conference at the PPM Office.

Heena also stated that the incumbent government is not doing anything to help the Elections Commission (EC) hold the election smoothly and that postponing the elections takes away several rights of the candidates.

Heena noted that although EC announced multiple dates for the elections day, the preparations for the elections has still not begun including announcement of the elections.

This can result in several voted being spoil votes and if that happens, it is a very concerning matter for us.

The Spokesperson of the Opposition Coalition and PPM, Heena Waleed stated.

Heena also informed that EC recently noted of having difficulties in finding enough officials for the elections and in training those officials as well.

While the government is supposed to solve the budget issues and other issues that raise, Heena stated that the incumbent government is not doing any of these things and are deliberately delaying the elections because they are certain of their defeat in the elections. Heena called on to provide equality in the elections and to allow the opposition parties to campaign properly.
