Addu City, Maldives – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate for Addu City mayor, Ali Nizar has won.
Nizar had competed with PPM candidate Mohamed Latheef and independent candidate Ibrahim Thohir.
According to the latest figures received by ‘The Times of Addu’, Nizar has got 1,443 votes while PPM candidate Latheef had gotten 1,018 votes. Independent candidate Ibrahim Thohir got 61 votes.
In a primary election held on 31st of January 2020 to allocate the ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket to contest in the council elections, former Parliament Member of Hithadhoo Dhekunu constituency Ali Nizar with a staggering difference of 1532 votes by defeating the 3 term mayor Abdulla Sodiq.
Nizar bagged himself 2801 votes while Sobe came second with 1269 votes. Ahmed Adhuham, president of MDP Addu wing only managed to gather 1016 votes.
Nizar has been seen as a politically outspoken person especially since he was in parliament. He has been seen as a politician with good relations with the current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and also the Former President and current Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.
