Nahula to compete for Malé City deputy mayor

Malé, Maldives – Councillor-elect for Villimalé constituency on a Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) ticket, Nahula Ali has announced that she will be competing for the deputy mayor of Malé City.

In an announcement released by Nahula, she stated that it was the wish of Former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayoom to have educated, capable and fearless woman to be the deputy mayor of Malé City in order to gain votes of youths and women in the 2023 presidential election.

She also added that as the mayor of the city would be a male and by having her as the deputy mayor sends a strong message of gender equality and equal power distribution which PPM also advocates for.

The opposition, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) won 12 out of 19 seats in the Malé City Council, winning major seats such as Villimalé and Hulhumalé seat. 

Former Housing Minister and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) mayoral candidate of Malé, Dr. Mohamed Muiz has won the Malé City mayoral election by a landslide. 

Dr Muiz defeated Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, Anas Abdul Sattar by securing 9,548 (61%) votes from the counted votes. MDP candidate Anas had received 5,757 (36.97%) votes while independent candidate Alhan Fahmy had gotten only 265 (1.7%) votes.
