Educator and author Naaila’s death ruled as Covid-19 related

Malé, Maldives – Beloved teacher and cookbook author, Naaila Ibrahim Kaleyfaan’s death has been ruled as a Covid-19 related case.

According to local news reports, Naaila passed away after treatment for long term illness at ADK Hospital. Naaila’s funeral was conducted according to safety protocols set by Health Protection Agency (HPA) after postmortem Covid-19 tests came back positive.

Naaila was educated in Sri Lanka and New Zealand and spent more than 25 years as a teacher in Ameeniyya School, teaching History and English. After retiring from Aminiya School, she also taught at Ghiyaasuddin School. Naaila was also the President of Women’s Development Committee made in 1980 under the National Planning Agency.

Her cookbook “Zeenaaru” was re-published and sold out seven times up until 2002.

Naaila is survived by a husband; the Former Education Minister and ‘Haveeru’ news Chairman Dr. Mohamed Zahir Hussain and three children; the Executive Director of ‘Mihaaru’ news, Waail Zahir Hussain, former Member of Parliament and notable female entrepreneur, Lubna Zahir Hussain, and MIRA’s deputy chairperson to Board of Directors, Leena Zahir Hussain.

The President of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, First Lady Fazna Ahmed and other notable figures have passed their condolences upon her death.
