Transport Ministry to reinstate 9 employees in wrongful termination lawsuit

Malé, Maldives – Maldives Employment Tribunal has ordered to pay compensation and reinstate 9 employees in wrongful termination case.

In January 2020, 11 employees were fired from the Maldives Transport Authority, under Transport Ministry. The employees include both senior and junior employees and were terminated due to low performance and poor attendance according to Permanent Secretary at the Transport Ministry Abdulla Fayaz.

At the time, the Transport Authority assured that the terminations were according to procedure.

Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) represented 9 of the 11 individuals, while 2 filed their cases individually. In the case by PILC the employment tribunal ordered to reinstate, pay salary and allowances to all 9 employees. Among the 9 employees, 2 employees salary and allowances were to be paid after deducting the salary they earned from working elsewhere during the period of termination to avoid unjust enrichment.
