Velana International Airport security tightened

Malé, Maldives – Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has revealed that they have increased the security of Velana International Airport following reports of a threat.

According to the spokesperson of MNDF, Captain Ibrahim Azim, security of the main international airport of the country was tightened as a special operation was being carried out since last night following a reported threat but had not revealed any further details.

Armed military personnel and police officers have controlled the movements to and from the airport since last night, including checks on all vehicles going in and out of the airport. MNDF officers have been checking under the seats of motorcycles, vehicle trunks and baggage’s of passengers as well.

While local media sources have reported that MNDF had gotten reports of an attack being planned at the airport, MNDF did not confirm the news. This comes while Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed was injured in an assassination attempt on him using an IED on May 6, 2021.

This also comes while Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) had revealed on May 13, 2021 that armed military personnel have started to patrol in atolls of the Maldives outside of Greater Malé Area. MNDF stated that this was decided in order to strengthen the security within the Maldives following the assassination attempt on Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.
