Malé, Maldives – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced that the party’s internal congress elections will be held on September 25.
The elections were previously scheduled to be held on 29 May 2021, but were postponed due to the terrorist attack targeted towards the party leader, former President of Maldives, and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
In a notice made today, MDP confirmed that the elections are now to be kept on September 25.
MDP will be electing a total of 455 members into different positions at the party’s congress.
According to the guidelines regarding the party’s congress, MDP members running for president of constituencies must acquire at least 50 signatures from citizens from their constituency. While members contesting for presidency in provinces or cities must submit 200 signatures of supporters to contest in the congress elections.
Members who want to participate in the election were to submit all documents before the midnight of May 8, and would be selected if all the requirements made by the MDP National Council are fulfilled.
MDP stated that the names of the candidates are announced after the selection process.
