Suspect of fatal hit & run accident denies hiding from authorities

Malé, Maldives – Suspect of fatal hit and run case where the driver left passenger of the motorcycle after crashing into a food cart, Ahmed Athif Abdulla (26), has denied hiding from the police.

During a remand hearing at the Criminal Court on Tuesday, Ahmed Athif denied hiding from the police. He, however, did not deny involvement in the accident. The suspect remanded for 10 days said that he is a friend of the victim. Athif appealed to the court that he had a 3 month old child dependent on his care and his detention would leave said child helpless.

Maldives Police arrested Athif on May 26 with a court warrant at 17:00.

On May 22, a speeding motorcycle crashed into a food cart stationed at Huvafenee Goalhi in Malé and killed a 22 year old Maldivian man. The youth was in the passenger seat of the motorcycle.

The driver fled the scene leaving the passenger on the road. The accident victim died after a part of the foodcart was impaled on his neck causing a fatal injury.
