Government has failed to control Covid-19: Opposition Coalition

Malé, Maldives – Opposition Coalition, consisting of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) has stated that the current government has failed to control Covid-19 outbreak in Maldives.

In a press statement released by the opposition, they stated that the government had failed to take necessary actions in order to prevent uncontrollable spread of Covid-19 and the increasing number of deaths in the country and that it is concerning how the government is not taking the situation seriously.

The Opposition Coalition also stated that the government was not giving enough attention to the increasing number of deaths and that the government has been negligent in managing the crisis.

Citing the two recent cases of medical negligence which lead to the death of 10 year old Mariyam Mishka Mohamed and 28 year old Maryam Ibrahim, opposition stated that government had not done their job properly and governments failure in the health sector was evident from these two cases.

Opposition coalition further stated that according to the family, the ventilator which was taken with Maryam Ibrahim during the flight to Malé had no charge and that air had to be manually pumped with a resuscitator by the healthcare workers who were with her. Opposition stated that while she had to be airlifted because her health was deteriorating, that the government had failed to ensure that the proper healthcare equipment had been provided to the patient.

They also pointed out that 10 year old Mariyam Mishka Mohamed also passed away due to negligence and that government had not taken any proper responsibility for the case.

Opposition also called out President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to take responsibility and answer to the families and the public for the high number of casualties and the deaths which have occurred due to the negligence of the government and its authorities.

Opposition coalition further added to take the necessary precautionary measures in the country to manage the pandemic better and to carry out proper investigations to bring those responsible for the mismanagement of the situation to justice. Opposition had also called out to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) to investigate the cases and take action against those responsible.
