Malé, Maldives – Department of National Registration (DNR) said that expired National Identity Cards can be used till the end of August in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

DNR stated in their newsletter released today, that the decision was taken as they believe that it is not a wise decision for many people to gather in one place during the current Covid-19 situation and that it may be difficult for citizens to obtain services from the office due to the current Covid-19 measures implemented by Health Protection Agency.

DNR has extended the expiry of all currently expired ID cards to the end of August and requested for all authorities giving out services to citizens to check the expiry of the ID cards accordingly.

Although the expiry of the cards have been extended, citizens currently living in Malé and those working in resorts can apply to renew their ID cards online.

Maldives is currently going through the worst wave of Covid-19 to have hit the country since the pandemic first began last year. Although the number of daily cases are gradually decreasing, health authorities advise the citizens to strictly adhere to HPA guidelines and stay at home to minimise the spread of the virus as much as possible.
