Malé, Maldives —Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has denied the statement of “6 May Committee” that HRCM is not investigating the terror attack that took place against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on May 6th.
The “May 6” Committee is an MDP committee that closely inspects the inquiry of the terror attack and the actions that are being taken regarding it.
Chairperson of “May 6” Committee, MP for Vilifushi Constituency Hassan Afeef stated last night although a life risking event took place, he is not aware that HRCM even released a statement regarding it. Afeef questioned how they can be sure that HRCM is working on the case if they did not even condemn the attack.
As a response to the “6 May” Committee, HRCM released a statement last night in their defense, denying the statement of the Committee.
The statement read that on the night of the attack, a team from HRCM went to ADK Hospital at approximately 21:00 and that the Commission was inspecting on how things were going at the hospital regarding the attack till 23:00 that night.
HRCM also said that they tweeted that night condemning the attack on Speaker Nasheed and called on to give the rightful punishment to those who were involved in the attack.
In the tweet, the Commission stated that they are monitoring the attack on Speaker Nasheed.
In addition to this, HRCM also released a statement on the following day, condemning the attack on Speaker Nasheed and noting that they are closely monitering the incident as well.
In the statement they released last night, HRCM stated that they are currently monitoring developments that are related to the attack, such as the actions of the relevant authorities towards the attack.
The Commission also revealed that they sent a document to acquire information required for the investigation from Malé city council, Police, Planning Ministry and the Defense Ministry. According to HRCM, they received information from all associations except the Defense Ministry.
HRCM stated that it is concerning that “May 6” Committee did not properly collect information or even look into the previous tweets of HRCM before saying inaccurate things about the Commission.
