Malé, Maldives – Opposition Party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has chosen Ahmed Nareesh as the party representative for the Malé Deputy Mayor position.
In addition to Nareesh, Councilor for Maafannu Medhu Constituency, Councilors for Hulhumalé, Ibrahim Shujau and Vilimalé, Nahula Ali, contested for the position in the internal vote by PPM Malé council members including Mayor Mohamed Muizzu.
Nareesh was elected to represent PPM with 5 voted of 13 members who voted during today’s meeting at PPM headquarters. Shujau and Nahula both received 4 votes.
The Malé Deputy Mayor will also be elected in a similar fashion by votes of all council members and the mayor. The Deputy Mayor is chosen through a secret vote.
PPM took over the majority of the Capital Malé city in the 2021 elections defeating the ruling MDP party with a big lead in the Local Councils 2020. PPM party has a total of 13 members while the ruling party has 5 councillors in the Malé city council.
While the Mayors and Deputy Mayors were to be sworn in on May 17, special allowances were made for Malé city council upon their request due to Covid-19 complications. The Local Government Authority (LGA) has given until tomorrow for Malé City to elect a Deputy Mayor.
