All of Maldives should mourn the child’s murder: Gender Minister

Male’, Maldives — Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi made a statement declaring that the whole country should experience grief and sadness over the senseless murder of a child.

Her sentiments follow an announcement by Maldives Police Service (MPS) early Tuesday morning confirming the uncovering of a deceased 13-year-old boy in Hulhumalé. The child was previously reported as having been kidnapped.

In her tweet, the minister appeared to address the nation at large, stating that the “intentional murder of a small child who has the right to grow with love, care and protection” should move everyone to tears. She ended her message by extending condolences and prayers to the bereaved family.

In addition, Minister Aishath called on related associations to work together and strengthen governmental efforts made towards ensuring the safety of all children.

Maldives Police Service reported that following a 48-hour search for a kidnapped child, the boy was discovered dead at approximately 0238 hours. Sources have revealed that the body was brought in from the lagoon.

Police also revealed the arrest of another minor aged 17, along with an adult aged 27, in connection to the murder and kidnapping. Local media Mihaaru has alleged that the two individuals were known to be friends with the young victim. 

Authorities have assured that the matter is being investigated as a serious case. As yet, no further details have been released to the public.
